The most successful Swedish goal scorer
He thus surpassed Fredrik Ljungberg
Alexander Isak has written himself into the history books as the most successful Swedish goal scorer in the Premier League. With two goals in two minutes against Nottingham Forest, he secured three important points for Newcastle and thus surpassed Fredrik Ljungberg in the prestigious statistic.
After two goalless matches, the Swedish striker was back on the score sheet. The first goal came after a VAR review for a handball, where the referee pointed to the penalty spot after just over half an hour of play. Isak stepped up and coolly placed the ball in the middle of the goal, giving Newcastle a 3–1 lead.
– I had already decided to put it in the middle. The goal counts, the rest doesn't matter, Isak told Sky Sports. Just under two minutes later, it was time again. Isak finished with his left foot, via a defender, and extended the lead to 4–1.
Before that, Newcastle had turned an early deficit around after quick goals by Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy. Nottingham Forest reduced the deficit in the final stages, but never really came close to threatening Newcastle's victory.
– We had a brilliant first half. The reaction after conceding a goal was really good. In the second half, we dropped a bit and conceded unnecessary goals, but I'm happy with the win, says Isak.
When he was substituted in the 87th minute, he could celebrate both three points, his 50th Premier League goal, and that he is now Sweden's foremost goal scorer in the league. With his 18th and 19th goals of the season, he now shares second place in the goal-scoring chart with Erling Haaland from Manchester City.
– It was an important win. We want to win more comfortably, but this was the most important thing, says Isak after the match.
