Rodrigo Bentancur suspended for seven matches after racist statement
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has received his punishment after making a racist statement about teammate Heung-min Son.
The punishment consists of a seven-match suspension and fines of 1.4 million Swedish kronor.
Rodrigo Bentancur Colmán, born 25 June 1997 in Nueva Helvecia, is a Uruguayan football player who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. He also represents the Uruguayan national football team.
The incident occurred during an interview on a Uruguayan TV program, where the host asked Bentancur if he could arrange a match shirt from Son. The midfielder then replied: "Sonny's? It might as well be his cousin, since they all look alike."
The 27-year-old player was accused of racism and later apologized to Son, who accepted the apology and acknowledged that the statement was unfortunate and a mistake.
The English Football Association (FA) has now announced its decision and describes the event as a “serious breach”. In addition to the suspension, Bentancur has also been fined approximately 1.4 million kronor.
